I was just so enthralled by Monday (June 15) TheStarTwo’s main topic talking all about “Ah Bengs” that I just had to put something here.
Ah Bengs are generally used in Malaysia and Singapore to refer to ethnic distasteful Chinese male youths with low education, crude, loud, foul mouthed, speaks bad English and has a terrible sense of fashion or none at all. At least that's how the stereotype goes.
The common Ah Beng would sport an outrageously bleached or blond-dyed hair, bootcut trousers, a tight t-shirt, some not really pretty tattoos and long fingernails on all fingers or just their pinkie. It’s even wikiable! (is that even a word?)
The tell-tale signs if you are one!
- Has typically long bleached or blond-dyed hair, spiky at the back and long in the front which he sees out of one eye.
- Wears bootcut jeans and flamboyant shirts such as colorful floral or dragon design. However nowadays, tries to follow Japanese street fashion.
- Sits at the table is with one leg up on the stool.
- Has the loudest mobile ringtones around. Notoriously “Fast & Furious: Tokyo Drift theme song” or Techno music. The point is to make sure others hear and notice his ringtone.
- Have long fingernails especially on his pinkie... all the better to clean his ears/mouth/nose with.
- He has a unique and very limited command of the English language, usually mixes few languages together with English, talks loudly and has curse words in every single sentence.
- Has distinctive trouble with the letter “R” in words and ends up replacing it with the letter “L”, pronounces “very” as “valley” and “related” as “lee-lated”.
